About The Event

A new state law requires school officials to consider the use of restorative practice methods to repair relationships and remediate behavior when incorporating traditional discipline methods including detention and suspension. Occupational therapists are uniquely poised to address the social-emotional needs of this at-risk population. Scratch the Surface is a program developed and facilitated by occupational therapists that incorporates standardized assessments, machine technology, and traditional woodworking to foster empathy and a sense of engagement in the school community. This presentation will provide an overview of Scratch the Surface as well as tips for developing occupation-based practices in any setting.
